I’m an editorial consultant, adviser and mentor with over twenty years of publishing experience, and work on both adult fiction (literary and commercial) and non fiction projects. My clients have included British and American writers, most of the London publishing houses, agents, The Literary Consultancy and New Writing North. I help join the dots between writers, agents and publishers, and facilitate the building of relationships that lead to debut writers signing their first publishing deal. I’ve written fourteen Afterwords for the Macmillan Collector’s Library, and have every year since 2014 been one of the advisory judges shortlisting for the Bridport First Novel Prize and in 2020 was one of the shortlist judges for the Northern Writers first novel award (I’ve subsequently mentored winners of both awards). I began my career at Penguin in 1994, just after graduating from Oxford in English and French, and during my seven years there worked on all the adult imprints, latterly as an Editor at Penguin Press, working on non-fiction and the Penguin Modern Classics. My interests and areas of expertise range from literary and commercial fiction through to mainstream and academic non-fiction, and my focus is on helping my clients develop compelling books that are characterised by flawless prose, clarity of thought and ambition and keen commercial awareness.
